Audrey Hobert covers Malcolm Todd’s ‘Earrings’ for Like A Version

Audrey Hobert may have been labouring over her cover song choice but the decision was obvious. She had to return the honour to her brother Malcolm Todd and cover one of his tracks.

Stepping into the studio after her younger brother reworked one of her tracks for his Like A Version, Hobert brought her off-beat indie pop to Malcolm Todd’s ‘Earrings’.

“I will never, ever regret that there’s a version of me singing my own blood’s song,” she said.

“It meant so much to me that he sang my song, so I wanted to sing his song. In our family we go tit for tat, and we go song for song.”

Audrey didn’t stray too far from the original for her Like A Version debut, keeping the pace and energy of her brother’s original while bringing her own vocal melodies to the front.

The only thing she worried about was whether she had the lung capacity to carry the tune without having to take a breath.

“You know what I thought I would enjoy and these last few nights going to bed fantasising about?” she said.

“Was singing that whole ‘your love was in your head…’ in one breath. Very hard. I don’t think I got it. Roll the tape.”
